The Equality Act 2010 brings together over 116 separate pieces of legislation into one single Act.
Combined, they make up a new Act that provides a legal framework to protect the rights of
individuals and advance equality of opportunity for all.
The Act simplifies, strengthens and harmonizes the current legislation to provide Britain with a new
discrimination law which protects individuals from unfair treatment and promotes a fair and more
equal society.
The nine main pieces of legislation that have merged are:
• The Equal Pay Act 1970
• The Sex Discrimination Act 1975
• The Race Relations Act 1976
• The Disability Discrimination Act 1995
• The Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003
• The Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003
• The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006
• The Equality Act 2006, Part 2

CQC inspections have frequently resulted in requests to see evidence of how the Practice
has considered access and attempted to make improvements. It is recognised that it is not
always reasonably possible to make structural changes to buildings, occasionally such
changes are not permitted because of local planning rules. The CQC will usually accept
this provided practice owners have made suitable alternative arrangements for patients.
However the Act requires you to make these considerations and having completed a
suitable audit is a good first step.
Once you have answered the questions, you should consider what actions are required and
how and when you plan to achieve them. There is a SMART Action Plan section at the end
of this audit.

disability equaility issues.
4. The practice has in place a comprehensive training programme
based on the results of a training needs analysis.

Appendix A
• Car Parking • Key
1. Accessible parking bay.
The width of 3600mm is required because wheelchair transfer may be needed from the drivers or the
passengers side.
The length of 5000mm is required because some people store their wheelchair in the boot of the car.
2.
A wheelchair transfer zone shared between two bays increases the number of bays where space is
limited.
3.
Totally level access from the front of bays is to be encouraged.
4.
Footpaths should be provided to the front of parking bays, so that bay users do not have to move
behind parked vehicles and into the flow of traffic. This is especially hazardous for wheelchair users
where they may be below the line of other motorists vision.
5.
Where level access is provided to the front of bays, signs can be used to prevent vehicles from
overrunning parking spaces

Provisions
An internal stair will satisfy requirement M2 if;
1.
It has flights whose unobstructed widths are at least 100mm;
2.
All step nosings are distinguishable through contrasting brightness
3.
The rise of a flight between landings is not more than 1800mm;
D It has top and bottom, and if necessary intermediate landings, each of whose lengths is not less than
1200mm clear of any door swing in to it
5.
The rise of each step is uniform and not more than 170mm
6.
The going of each step is uniform and not less than 250mm, which for tapered treads should be
measured at a point 270mm from the “inside” of the stair
7. Risers are not open
8.
There is a continuous handrail on each side of flights and landings, if the rise of the stair comprises
two or more risers.
